The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Consider this a dare for partners in committed relationships who are fans of scary movies: Settle in with your significant other and stream Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its online premiere on Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like typical physical horror, but beneath Together lies a profound meditation about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, the two stars infuse a unique chemistry to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The plot begins when Tim and Millie transition from the big city to the countryside for her career. A familiar story element, of course, but that’s primarily where the cliches conclude. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the protagonists tumble into an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a strange force starts to affect the duo. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The whole movie is a methodically building fright fest, weaving in elements of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes amidst something horrific). The director skillfully blends these components expertly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and removed from his network of friends. He dreads the concept of totally forfeiting his sense of self in another person. This fear is intensified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision is that he never makes Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie face the type of challenges that come with any relationship a decade in. Fundamentally, they continue to care for one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these fears of codependency and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal work together symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Conversely, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the ending plant anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your significant other and state, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience at this very moment.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu now.
